Bringing Light Into Darkness: Prison Mala Project
Over the past two decades the the population of women in prison has increased by 278%. Additionally, we know that 95% of the women currently incarcerated struggle with PTSD. We have a women’s prison crisis.
The rapidly growing population combined with limited funding means that these women struggle to access quality programs to support them as they heal from trauma, build character, and work to create a better life for themselves. But, DAYA Foundation is here to help.
DAYA offers a 200-hour yoga teacher training program for adults in custody who have realized the power and benefits of yoga and want to give back to their community. These women are then able to teach yoga to other women in custody and in turn build mindfulness, community, and resiliency. DAYA has been successfully running these teacher training programs in men’s prisons in Oregon for 3 years.
In September 2019, we expanded to Coffee Creek Correctional Facility a declared trauma-informed women’s prison in Wilsonville, Oregon. We launched our second training at the men's prison in Salem, Oregon in November.
We have seen tremendous benefits of the program for individuals as well as the overall community. The need for DAYA’s programming in women’s prison is great but we can’t do it without your help.
That is why we are asking you to help us build a "MALA" for each training participant!
The value of a 200-hr Yoga Teacher Training costs $3300 on the "outside". At Coffee Creek the training is being valued at $2484 per student. (This includes the highest level training program in the Pacific NW, their program books and training manuals, one to one mentorship through their program, and a certification from the Yoga Alliance.)
